Art history 101 via indie pop
Ok, I was an Art History major so there’s a special place in my heart for this video.
The group Hold Your Horses! released their video for 70 Million – a nice orchestral indie pop tune – in February. They used the video as vehicle for an introduction to art history. Here’s my sketchy first pass at the works they reference:
- Leonardo da Vinci The Last Supper
- Sandro Botticelli Birth of Venus
- Rembrandt van Rijn Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp
- Hans Holbein Henry VIII
- Johannes Vermeer Girl with a pearl earring
- Theodore Gericault Raft of the Medusa
- Jacques Louis David Death of Marat
- Michelangelo Creation
- Rene Magritte The Son of Man
- Piet Mondrian Composition with Red Blue Yellow
- Frieda Kahlo Self Portrait
- Dora Maar?
- Eduard Munch The Scream
- Vincent van Gogh Self Portrait
- Andy Warhol Marilyns
- Gabrielle d’Estrees
- Giovanni Cimabue Madonna and Child with Angels
- Caravaggio The Beheading of St John the Baptist
- Eduard Manet Olympia
- Eugene Delacroix Liberty Leading the People
- Otto Dix Sylvia van Harden
- Gustav Klimt The Kiss
- Marc Chagall La Mariee
- Diego de Silva y Velazquez Las Meninas
- Vincent van Gogh Sunflowers
